Introduction
This set of cards and this guidebook relate directly to the stories of Rongowhakaata and Tūranganui-ā-Kiwa.
They have been created so they can be used in many different ways:
As traditional style playing cards
As a resource for learning and engagement
As value-based cards, or kaupapa cards, that can be applied to different situations, activities, places.
This Guidebook
This booklet is designed to expand on the themes shown on the cards, and to provide guidance for interpretation and wānanga. The Houses
Our Houses are built on the following four themes (Pou)
1. POU TOKOMANAWAThe qualities of this House are Water, Love, and Whakapapa. The stories in this book explore the whakapapa of Rongowhakaata and the connections with those of Tūranga. The qualities of this House and the themes on each card can be used to explore your own whakapapa, and to strengthen relationships and kinship ties.
2. POU TĀHŪ
The qualities of this House are wind, wellbeing, and history. These stories carry the historical challenges of Tūranganui-ā-Kiwa and their impacts on iwi and the environment. The qualities of this House and the themes on each card can be used as a guide to uncover the histories unique to you.3. POU TUARONGO
The qualities of this House are Land, Environment, and Ancestors. The story here follows the famous oriori of Tūranga, Pōpō — each card is linked to a verse or section of that oriori. Pōpō gathers the stories of life in Tūranga, of knowledge, and of the taiao. The qualities of this House and the themes on each card can be used as a guide to seek knowledge connected to the land and environment.4. POU ĀWHĀ
The qualities of this House are Fire, Leadership, and Protocol. Rongowhakaata protocol (kawa) provides a framework for coming together. It can be applied in many situations that bring people together, whether on another marae or in other gatherings. The kawa of each hapū is unique, and varies across Aotearoa. If you wish, this House can serve as inspiration to express your own kawa, to guide how things are structured and carried out in different contexts.
