Ngā Rauemi Reo Māori
The iwi aspires for a thriving reo, one that is lived, and whose values and qualities seep into every aspect of life for the Rongowhakaata individual. The revitalisation of te reo o Rongowhakaata connects the breadth of Rongowhakaata to the depth of identity and connection to source. It guides the practice of speaking with strength, whilst remaining balanced, connected and creative.
We have developed a range of te reo o Rongowhakaata resources for uri to access and download below.
Waerenga-a-Hika: The Hinge of Fate
This year marks 160 years since Waerenga-a-Hika — a moment that reshaped the future of all Tūranga iwi. In November 1865, our tīpuna stood together to defend their whenua and their right to live as Māori. What happened over those six days changed everything. Waerenga-a-Hika is remembered not only for the loss and injustice that followed, but for the unity, resilience, and integrity our people carried through that time — qualities that still guide us today.

Taikura 2025 was a vibrant expression of our kaumātua leadership in full flight—with dignity and connection our whare was filled with laughter, vitality, and warmth. Kaumātua reminded us not just of the importance of knowledge, but of the life force that carries it forward—joy, humour, aroha, and the strength found in coming together.
Maramataka – living knowledge
This maramataka was shared and recorded by our Rongowhakaata kaumātua in the late 1990s and early 2000s during a series of hui where kaumātua came together to capture kōrero and evidence for our Treaty Settlement Claims. We are proud to bring this mātauranga forward again, making it accessible for whānau to wānanga, observe, and continue growing their own maramataka knowledge.
