Mauri ā-nuku, Mauri ā-rangi
Koia te mauri nā ngā atua
Koia te takoha nā ngā atua
Tēnei te mauri ka whakapiki
Tēnei te mauri ka whakakake
Tēnei te mauri o te reo
e whētero mai nei i taku waha
ki te whei ao, ki te ao mārama
Uhi! Wero! Tau mai te mauri!
Haumi e! Hui e! Tāiki e!
Fashion! Shape!
Inscribe the surface of my tongue
With the origin of the language, with the essence of the language, with the foundations of the language, with the intricacies of the language
Do not omit any aspect but rather elucidate both minuscule and substantial detail,
Irradiate breadth and expanse
Illuminate both trough and peak
Therein may the life-force of the language flourish both within, and without The divine spark gifted from the deities of our ancestors
Let the mauri bloom,
Let the mauri prosper
Allow the mauri of the language
To thrive upon the palate of my mouth
To find expression through the vehicle of the word!
The mauri of the language flourishes!
Let it be so!
Kōrerotia te reo
The iwi aspires for a thriving reo, one that is lived, and whose values and qualities seep into every aspect of life for the Rongowhakaata individual. The revitalisation of te reo o Rongowhakaata connects the breadth of Rongowhakaata to the depth of identity and connection to source. It guides the practice of speaking with strength, whilst remaining balanced, connected and creative.
We have developed a range of te reo o Rongowhakaata resources for uri to access and download below.
Our online reo programme Kura Pō with learning levels from beginners to advanced speakers is a great place to grow confidence with your reo. Learn more here
He Maramataka Nō Rongowhakaata
This maramataka was shared and recorded by our Rongowhakaata kaumātua in the late 1990s and early 2000s during a series of hui where kaumātua came together to capture kōrero and evidence for our Treaty Settlement Claims. We are proud to bring this mātauranga forward again, making it accessible for whānau to wānanga, observe, and continue growing their own maramataka knowledge.
Tākaro kohe
Tākaro Kohe are a fun way to explore Rongowhakaata kupu, whenua, tīpuna, and kōrero whīwhiwhi (tongue twisters). There are three themes to discover—follow the steps to play, learn and test your skills! You can also make up your own game.
Available as a free A3 download to print with playing instructions.
Ngā Kohinga kāri o Rongowhakaata
The Rongowhakaata Cards were developed in partnership with Rongowhakaata artist Zak Waipara and the Ministry of Education as a Te Reo Māori resource for Rongowhakaata uri. This kaupapa draws from Rongowhakaata mātauranga and kawa, embedding cultural depth within each design. They are printed in Te Reo Māori only and come with an instruction booklet.
